Red Fort Delhi :
Shah Jahan shifted his capital from Agra to
Shahjahanabad and laid the foundation of Red Fort, or
the Lal Quila, on 16th April 1639. It took nine years to
build this mighty citadel and it got completed on 16th
April 1648. It is said that about one crore rupees, an
astronomical sum in those days, was spent on its
construction. Half of this sum was spent to build the
exotic palaces within the fort. Built of red sandstone,
it is octagonal in shape, with two longer sides on the
east and west.
Some of the main buildings within the fort are:
Diwan-i-Am
Diwan-i-Am or Hall of Public Audience is situated in the
Red Fort of Delhi. It originally had a courtyard on its
front and was richly ornamented with gilded stuccowork.
Heavy curtains graced the main hall, which were three
bays in depth.
Hamam
Accompanying the Diwan-i-Khas, or Hall of Selective
Audience, the Hamam (bathroom set) consists of three
apartments interconnected by corridors. The marble
floors and dados are inlaid with beautiful floral
patterns of multi-colored stones.
Moti Masjid
The personal mosque of Aurungzeb, Moti Masjid or Pearl
Mosque lies to the west of Hamam. Situated on a higher
level than courtyards, the prayer-hall of the mosque has
inlaid black-marble outlines of 'musallas' (small
carpets for prayers) and is surmounted by three bulbous
domes.
10:00 hrs - visit Raj Ghat
Rajghat
is the last resting place of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father
of the Nation. The cremation of Mahatma Gandhi took
place at the Delhi Raj Ghat only, on 31st January 1950.
The memorial stone of Mahatma Gandhi placed there is a
simple square platform made of black stone, with the
words "Hey Ram" inscribed near it. As homage to the
Mahatma, an eternal flame, in a copper urn, keeps on
burning there. Enclosing the memorial is a low wall,
simple with no ornamentation.
11:00 hrs - visit India Gate
India Gate :
At the center of New Delhi stands the 42m high India
Gate, an "Arc-de-Triomphe" like Archway in the middle of
a crossroad. Almost similar to its French counterpart
war memorial. It commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers
who lost their lives fighting for the British Army
during the First World War and bears the names of more
than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the
Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919. The
foundation stone was laid by His Royal Highness, the
Duke of Connaught in 1921 and was designed by Edwin
Lutyens.
11:45 hrs - Visit Humayun Tomb.
One of the most spectacular Mughal buildings, Humayun's
tomb was added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 1993.
Built by Haji Begum, the widow of Humanyun, the second
Mughal Emperor, the mausoleum is known to the precursor
of world famous Taj Mahal. Built with a cost of one and
a half million rupees, the monument heralded the
construction of garden-tombs on the Indian subcontinent.
Experience the majesty of Humayun's tomb with Hotels of
New Delhi.
12:45 hrs - Bahai house / Lotous Temple.
Baha'i Temple
in Delhi is often compared to the Sydney Opera House.
Located 12km southeast of Connaught Place, has emerged
as a top attraction for the tourists. Popularly known as
the Lotus Temple, Baha'i Temple is a major feature of
Delhi and is well known for its appearance. There is no
doubt that in years to come the temple will prove to be
a mecca for the visitors. Baha'ism is considered to be a
syncretism of the nine great religions of the world and
traces its genesis to its prophet Baha'u'llah, born in
Persia in the twentieth century.
13:30 hrs - Time for Lunch.
15:00 hrs - visit Qutab Minar.
Qutab Minar
: tower of victory or the Qutub Minar that is an
excellent example of late Afghan building style in
Delhi, India. The Qutub Minar happens to be one of the
highest stone towers in India till date and is
definitely one of the most skilful and artistic
illustrations of Islamic architecture. In fact Qutub
Minar is recognized as one of the main landmark
monuments of Delhi, India.
The construction of the Qutub Minar began in the year
1199 under the supervision of Sultan Qutub-Ud-Din,
though he could not complete the structure during his
lifetime. Later his son-in-law, Illtumish undertook the
completion of this magnificent five-storied minar in
Delhi, India.
The 72.5 meter high tower is a splendid affair that
measures about 14.32 meters in thickness at the base and
gradually tapers with height to about a 2.7-meter width
at the peak.
The Qutub Minar was damaged twice by lightning in the
years 1326 and 1368. The marble structure that was
originally set atop the tower was damaged during the
first disaster and was replaced by another marble crown
designed by an English architect that was however
considered inappropriate and was removed in the later
years. This marble structure lies on display as an
exhibit on the lawns near the Qutub Minar.
16:30 hrs - Visit Jantar Mantar
Jantar Mantar is very popular among tourists and the
people of Delhi. The structure is another great
masterpiece of Indian architecture which shows the
scientific acumen of ancient India. Jantar Manter is
situated at Parliament Street, very close to Connaught
Place. Jantar Mantar is also called Delhi Observatory.
It is maintained by the Jaipur government because it was
built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur in 1710
A.D.
