Agra
is the one of the prominent destinations of the World
Tourism map with three heritage monuments -The Taj
Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri & Red Fort. It is more just a
dacadent city of graveyards and stones, but it is a
vibrant centre of Culture, Art and Religious
philosphies that have enriched mankind and shaped
humen thought over centuries. Agra is famous for
handicrafts products such as Inley work on Marvel,
Leather work,Footwear, Brasswear, Carpets, Jwellery,
Zari and Embroidery work.
Agra has found its mention in the famous Hindu epic
Mahabharat as the forest of Agraban close to Mathura.
Badal Singh founded the city in 1475. Sikandar Lodhi
made Agra his capital city. Later, Babur defeated the
Lodhis to capture the city situated on the banks of
River Yamuna and thus, the long association of Mughals
with Agra started. The Mughal love of architecture
translated into beautiful monuments such as Taj Mahal,
Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and Sikandra. The glory of
Agra was at its peak during the reign of Akbar, Jehangir
and Shah Jahan. Akbar made it the center of art,
culture, commerce and learning and Shah Jahan saw it in
full bloom. In fact, it is said that it was Akbar who
laid the foundation of the modern city that we see now
in 1558 and was known as Akbarabad. Most of the
buildings belong to the period between mid-16th century
and 17th century and were of high quality. These
monuments were built in the contemporary Mughal style.
Mughlai cuisine and the skilled craftsmen can still be
seen in the narrow lanes of the city as a reminiscent of
the lost times.
There are monuments at every nook and corner of Agra. It
is hardly a wonder considering the important position
that it held in Mughal India. The Moghuls were known for
their love of architecture and both the red sandstone
and marble architecture abounds in the region. Here, we
have discussed some of the monuments that have largely
remained unknown and have lost their place in the
memories of the common people yet are notable for their
unique architectural traits. The funny thing is that
even most of the locals do not know even the names of
most of these monuments.
Place to Visit:
Akbar's tomb :
Located in the quaint little town of Sikandra , 4 km from Agra ,
Akbar's Tomb is an excellent example of assimilation of
different styles of architecture and it represents a
significant departure from the earlier Mughal buildings.
The tomb carries the characteristic flavor of the airy
tiered pavilions of the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

Agra
Fort :The
magnificent towers, bastions, ramparts, and gateways of
the Agra Fort symbolize the stature and power of Mughal
Emperor Akbar. Built between 1565 and 1571 AD, it is
said that the emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj
Mahal, was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb. The
magnificent Agra fort, though started by Emperor Akbar,
was completed by his grandson Shah Jahan.
Tajmahal :The
most beautiful building in the world. In 1631 the
emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in memory of his
wife Mumtaz, who died in childbirth. The white marble
mausoleum at Agra has become the monument of a man's
love for a woman.
Shah Jahan came to power in 1622 when he seized the
throne from his father, while murdering his brothers to
ensure his claim to rule. He was known as an extravagant
and cruel leader. But he redeemed himself by his
generosity to his friends and the poor, by his passion
in adorning India with some of its most beautiful
architecture, and by his devotion to his wife Mumtaz
Mahal - Ornament of the Palace. He had married her when
he was 21, when he already had two children by an
earlier consort. Mumtaz gave her husband 14 children in
eighteen years, and died at the age of 39 during the
birth of the final child. Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal
as a monument to her memory and her fertility, but then
relapsed into a life of scandalous behavior. This tomb
was only one of hundreds of beautiful buildings that
Shah Jahan erected, mostly at Agra and in the new Dehli
that came into being under his planning.
Fateh-pur-sikri :
37 kms from Agra is built a city predominantly in Red
Sandstone and is called Fatehpur Sikri. This town was
built by the Mughal Emperor, Akbar. He had planned this
city as his capital but shortage of water compelled him
to abandon the city. After this within 20 years, the
capital of Mughals was shifted to Lahore .
Fatehpur Sikri was built during 1571 and 1585. Today
this ghost city has a population of about 30,000. This
deserted city has retained many of the old structures,
because of the efforts of the Archaeological department
.
Fatehpur Sikri is one of the finest examples of Mughal
architectural splendour at its height. Though the city
is in ruins, it is a place to visit if one comes to
Agra. But in real terms Fatehpur Sikri is a place where
one should spend some time. The sunset over the ruins is
sight to cherish.
Fatehpur Sikri is the best example of the culmination of
Hindu and Muslim architecture. Fatehpur Sikri Mosque is
said to be a copy of the mosque in Mecca and has
designs, derived from the Persian Hindu architecture.
